Goat Collective at The Brudenell Christmas Party

We managed to get a stall displaying our artwork at the Brudenell Christmas Party. We had a good response and even sold some work. I also designed the poster to advertise the event.

Goat Collective at Veg Out and Outlaws Yacht Club

On the 6th December Goat Collective had a particularly busy day. We attended the Christmas market at Northern Monk Brewing Company and also an artist networking day at Outlaws Yacht Club.
At the Christmas market we sold christmas cards, screen printed designs (one from each of us) and also lino cut designs which the customer could print themselves or just observe being printed. These were particularly popular.
For the Outlaws event we designed and made a stand to display both our freshers pack work and also the poster advertising the upcoming Disposable Society event.
Displayed below are some posts from our social media advertising and documenting the events.

Hyde Park Book Club Exhibition

John from Independent Leeds and East Street arts put us in touch with the guys at Hyde Park Book Club. They were just starting up a cafe/event space and were looking for artwork to display. We were looking for somewhere to display our artwork so the relationship is mutually beneficial. After talking with the guys there we decided to keep updating the artwork every month and running an event each month. Below are some screenshots of the ads which I designed on social media and also some other Instagram and twitter posts advertising the event. We had a really positive response and we are excited to build on our relationship with Hyde Park Book Club

The collages below the shelves were produced by me and a another member of Goat, Will Morrell. There is a third piece which isn't pictured in this shot.

JT Woodwork Logo

I was asked to produce a logo for a friend who is a woodworker, after a few sketches and some time spent on the computer I produced this. It shows the joins of the lines which is appropriate as joinery is a key skill within woodworking.

Goat Collective Freshers Fair

"Goat Collective is a diverse group of young creative individuals who are passionate about instigating positive change. We are creative thinkers, practitioners and friends who provide a variety of artistic disciplines, catering to your individual and specific needs. We work in close proximity with one another to produce new and exciting outcomes that fit together as a consistent body of work.

However, Goat Collective is more than this. The income we generate from commercial projects will be re-invested into work addressing current social and political issues. You aren't just our client, you're also our investor."

For the the launch of Goat Collective we decided to treat the freshers at Leeds College of Art to a poster pack. We've all experienced student halls and know how bare the walls can feel so what better to recieve than a pack of straight up artwork. Each poster pack contained 40 a4 photocopies on pastel stock (5 submitted by each member of Goat Collective) and an a3 screen print. This is our way of getting the Goat name out there and re-investing in an institution that has helped us get where we are today.

OUGD502 - Website homepage

I decided to buy a domain name to ensure that it doesn't get taken. I considered various possiblities but decided to just use my full name for the URL - www.danielgee.net

I don't feel I have enough work to justify setting up a website when I can just use portfolio sites such as Behance. I designed a homepage to attach to my domain which will send all traffic to my behance or my tumblr.

OUGD502 - Atelier 25

Atelier 25 is a design studio based in Paris. Their website is filled with beautiful design and Illustration and I love the way that they work with print. It does say on their website that they aren't taking any interns for the summer of 2015 which is a shame. I sent them an email anyway, just to let them know how much I like their work, who doesn't like a bit of flattery.

OUGD502 - Promo Pack

I spent time looking at various creative self promotion projects. This gave me inspiration but also made me realise that a lot of the projects were very similar. I wanted to produce something that didn't follow all the cliches.

One idea that I may pursue was to use a sugar glass bottle with my cv enclosed in this. This would be branded and packaged using my logo and other elements of my branding.

Due to cost limitations I decided against this idea. I also felt that the idea was a bit gimmicky and something much simpler would be more effective.
I decided to use a simple envelope with a typewritten letter enclosed. I feel the simplicity may be something that will appeal to the studios that I'm sending my work to.
I made a prototype to see how this would work and to define all the measurements.

When I make this again I intend to use paper I have made myself for the envelope and possibly incorporate some foil blocking. I also think I will fasten the envelope with a button and string.

OUGD502 - Stubborn Git

Recently I have been doing a fair bit of freelance work. The project which I feel has been most successful so far is the branding for 'Stubborn Git', a craft and belgian beer company. I have completed various different versions making modifications to suit various members of the company. The above version is either complete or very close to completion. Working with this client has given me a taste of what freelance work can be like and I have really enjoyed it. I have been promised further work for this company and may even be designing packaging which will be sat on the shelves of some of the UK's major supermarkets.

OUGD502 - Goat Freshers Pack

I recently purchased a zine called 'Common People,' a collaboration between Bronze Age editions and Museum Press. The zine is compiled of single page risograph printed a4 posters all on a variety of different coloured paper stocks.
This format of this zine gave me an idea for a promotional pack for Goat Collective. Me and Aidan (another member of Goat Collective) wrote a brief for each memeber of Goat to complete.

Personal Branding

I was more than happy with my existing logo and felt it didn't need a redesign. I wanted to look at a way to expand upon this branding though. I considered what my selling points as a creative were and decided that creativity, innovation and passion were three qualities that I pride myself upon. I decided to create some variations of my logo that convey these points.

OUGD502 - ICCYL Branding and Web Design

ICCYL or International Conference Centres for Young Leaders approached me and asked for some branding work doing earlier this year. I completed the project with a fast turnaround and created a set of logos that they were really pleased with. They came back to me recently and asked me to design a website for them. Web Design isn't an area I feel particularly comfortable with but I wanted to ensure that my branding was applied correctly so undertook the job.
I enlisted the help of a friend of mine who is a designer and programmer as I am clueless when it comes to coding websites. We are waiting on some images from ICCYL and then the website will be finished. To view the site in action go here.

OUGD502 - Atelier Martino&Jaña

I came across a branding project for the city of Porto which instantly caught my attention, not only due to the design itself but also as Porto is a city that I intend to visit over summer. The use of geometric shape and colour to differentiate between various areas of the city identity and to create a multi-faceted identities has been done really well, they have managed to avoid cliches whilst creating a project that is still clear and that has impact.
As the studio is based in Porto I will look at getting in touch with them and hopefully visiting their studio.

OUGD502 - Goat Collective Logo

We all agreed that we wanted a traditional style logo with a modern feel. We wanted it to make us look friendly and approachable and this is conveyed in the illustration style and the typeface. Below I have documented a few steps of the development.

OUGD502 - Taking Care of Business - Goat Collective

A large majority of my friends are creatives and a lot of them are very good at what they do. We came up with an idea to combine all our skills under one collective. We wanted to use our skills to promote social causes that we feel strongly about, as well as working commercially.

The 'Taking care of business' project was an excellent opportunity to develop this idea further.

Along with two other members of the collective I attended a week long enterprise course where I learnt invaluable information about the business side of the creative industry. We had visiting speakers from various different places come and spend time with us.
Keith Evans from CIDA talked to us about how viable our idea was and what it means to be a creative entrepreneur. We also looked into various business models such as: sole traders, partnerships, LTD companies, Not for Profit's and various others. With his help we determined that an LLP would be the most suitable for our business. With an LLP there is no rigid hierarchy and it eliminates any risk of bankruptcy.
We also looked at cashflow with Keith Evans and did some exercises to help us understand this in more depth.
Nick Scott spoke to us about the importance of writing a solid business plan and how to go about doing this.
Russell Smith, who owns his own accounting firm, came and talked to us about some basic accounting that we would need to know when setting up a business.
Anna Franks, a marketing a PR consultant spoke to us about effective marketing, some of the notes from this session are shown below.
A lawyer named Keith Arrowsmith spoke to us about intellectual property and copyright laws. This session was probably the one which I found most valuable; protecting Goat Collective's work is hugely important.
We had a session with Rick Ferguson about pitching our ideas, another vital part of any creative business. We then pitched our ideas to the Senior Management Team of Leeds College of Art. This was great practise and we got some really good feedback from it.
Shown below are some of the notes we made during the sessions alongside our partnership agreement.
